Beauty in the Everyday

As a full time student who lives over an hour away from my university (and travels on public transport) I have come to realise that I no longer admire the places that I see almost every day as I once did. I am overly familiar with my Geelong, Melbourne and studio surroundings as I see them daily.

In this time-lapse compilation I have explored how I can bring new life to these and see them in a new light and perhaps enjoy them again. I have done this by reversing and altering the speed of the scene and creating a kaleidoscopic or mirrored image. I have distorted the images during the editing process to encourage a slight confusion for the viewer as to what they are seeing. I have hidden the most well known aspect of the scene as a way to appreciate the other elements without distraction. I have then overlayed them in a collage layout as a way to look at them as a whole compilation instead of videos in a sequence. One of my main inspirations for this piece was Michael Shainblum’s video titled Mirror City Time lapse in which he recorded multiple hyper lapses of traffic at night in various cities and then mirrored them to make the original scene unrecognisable.
